It is an inescapable fact that many children find guns fascinating, and it is not uncommon to see a child in toy store begging his or her parents for a toy gun. Airsoft guns are the next step up from toy guns, and this gives some parents pause when they consider whether or not airsoft guns are suitable for their children to play with. While airsoft guns should not be considered “toys” as such, they are still perfectly suitable for children as long as they can be made to observe certain basic safety rules. In addition, when purchasing your child’s first airsoft gun, it is best to purchase one that is not too powerful, such as one of the electric airsoft pistols or perhaps a low-powered submachine gun. |
What Exactly Are Airsoft Guns
Airsoft guns originate in Japan, and are basically replicas of real guns that are made to fire small plastic pellets known as BBs. The firing mechanisms of airsoft guns differ, but even at their most powerful they are not able to penetrate skin and are therefore nowhere near as dangerous as real guns or even BB guns. Airsoft guns are sometimes confused with BB guns, but they are not the same thing. BB guns are guns that fire metal pellets which are much heavier than the plastic BBs used in airsoft.
BB guns were originally designed for real hunting, and as a result they were made to be able to penetrate skin and cause injury. Airsoft guns, on the other hand, were specifically developed for recreational purposes, and they are therefore not made powerful enough to cause serious injury. However, there is still the potential for accidents to occur, particularly if the proper safety precautions are not observed.
Different Types Of Airsoft Guns
The three main types of airsoft guns are distinguished by the type of mechanism used to propel the BBs. These three categories are spring-operated, electric and gas. Of the three categories of airsoft guns, gas operated guns are the least suitable for use by children, because they are also the most powerful type of airsoft gun, being powered by compressed gas.
Some spring-operated airsoft guns are also extremely powerful, not only presenting greater risk when operated by children, but also presenting some children with difficulty because the pulling back the spring to cock the gun can require a significant amount of strength. Thus electric airsoft guns strike the best balance and are the most suitable for children. The electric motor takes away the need to physically pull the spring back, making them easy for children to operate. Also, the sheer complexity of having so many moving parts in the gun makes it that much more difficult for manufacturers to make very powerful electric airsoft guns, so most electric airsoft guns are low-powered or medium-powered at best.
An Excellent Teaching Tool
Airsoft guns are great fun for children if you instruct your child on the proper method of handling the gun and also if you purchase the right type of airsoft gun for your child. Of the many types of airsoft gun available the best are probably the electric airsoft pistols as they are small and easy to handle and are also generally low-powered.
