The Guindy National Park is a large park located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India. The park spans an area of almost four square kilometres and is situated in the city of Chennai. Not only is it the eighth smallest park in the country, it is also one of the few national parks to be completely situated within a city. The grounds are actually an extension of the land surrounding the Raj Bhavan which acts as the official site of residence of the Governor of Tamil Nadu. The land consists of scrubland, forestland, streams and lakes. Originally Guindy Park was a game reserve that spanned around five square kilometres in area. The Guindy Lodge was established sometime in the early 1670s, by William Langhorne, a British Governor, on part of this land. The rest was privately owned by a British citizen. The area was eventually purchased by the Indian government and was used to build a variety of memorial buildings and educational institutes. Out of this a small portion was set aside for preservation. For a site so small, Guindy National Park is surprisingly full of easily accessible animal life. Among the wildlife found here are over twenty jackals, four hundred blackbucks, and nearly two thousand spotted deer. Also present are reptiles such as geckos and snakes and amphibians like tortoises. Invertebrates are also quite common here. Overall, the park contains around sixty species of invertebrates, fourteen species of mammals (including elephants, pangolins and Indian civets) and well over one hundred different species of birds. The park is open from 9 am to 5.30 pm. An entrance fee is charged but it is quite small.
