A group of about 50 parents have honored long time teacher Victor E. Acevedo. In a warm and inviting ceremony, a packed room at a small center invited Mr. Acevedo into what was going to be a community meeting. Little did he know that a group of parents and advocates plan on celebrating the 10th anniversary of his work with inner city students. "He thought this was a regularly scheduled community meeting," said Marta Riojas, who was one of the community organizers of the event and who has been working as a volunteer at the center that Mr. Acevedo created. "He drove up in his usual quiet way, parked the car and brought donuts and coffee for the community members. But we had other plans. Parents brought their favorite dishes. We know what he likes - enchiladas and tamales. So we made that for him today." Over the years Mr. Victor E. Acevedo has worked tirelessly to help the families of this hard hit community of Lost Angeles. He has created a variety of programs that have really helped the students. Among the programs Mr. Acevedo has created is a reading program aimed at helping students struggling in reading. Specially Mr. Acevedo has worked with English as a Second Language student helping them learn how to decode text, comprehend what their reading. The result greater English Fluency for students who turned around and seen improved grades, test scores, and confidence. "Whatever he does, it's working," stated one parent who has dropped off her two kids at the center twice a week. "I've been taking my kids here and he has helped them. They always want to come back even when we're too busy. So, I make it a habit to drop them off and then go and do shopping. He never charges anything. He is a saint and I appreciate what he has done for my children," said Julia, one of the parents with two kids in junior high school. Mr. Acevedo has been involved in so many different programs to help families that it's hard to write about them, however, his center that is on the edge of unincorporated Los Angeles has stayed open despite the increase in rent and utilities. "He finds way to work with people and private business to support every activity he does," stated one parent. "I've helped bring some supplies. I wish I could help him some more." Mr. Acevedo continues to help those in need. He plans to continue working on behalf of those who need it. "I am so thankful to these parents who have taken the time and made the effort to be here tonight and honor me. I need their support to continue my work. Without them getting in their car and bringing their kids to this small center, we wouldn't have anyone to help. I really am blessed and thankful," Mr. Acevedo stated.
