AS the 2012 Global Powers of Retailing report shows, the largest retail chains in 14 countries around the world are supermarkets, as well as 20 of the 80 biggest U.S. retail chains are also supermarket and grocery store chains as supermarkets reviews allege. Thus we can see how powerful the supermarket and grocery store retailers in the U.S. are. The presented results don't even include such major retail chains like Wal-Mart and Target, Costco, which are characterized by pretty aggressive work in order to steal a substantial piece of the retail grocery market share. If to compare the 2011 Largest U.S. Supermarkets and Grocery Store Chain list with the 2012 list which was published by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and STORES Magazine, we can see not that many changes, but they are definitely not insignificant. According to the lists as well as supermarkets reviews, some of the most notable changes which are about the largest U.S. supermarkets and grocery store chains are the next: Kroger managed to move up one position and thus became the fifth largest retail chain in the world. From the first sight it can seem to be not that significant improvement, but it is definitely no small feat to overtake Germany's largest discount store chain. Kroger also and widen the lead with the Costco Wholesale chain, which also sells a significant amount of groceries and food products. Whole Foods moved ahead to nine ranking position on the world's largest retail list. The company managed to overtake both The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company and Giant Eagle chains. The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company moved back to 19 positions on the 2012 world's largest list because of some financial difficulties. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, as its stock price fell 92%. The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company happened to be delisted from the New York Stock Exchange. Winn-Dixie also plummeted 16 positions. That happens as its main shoppers migrated away from Winn-Dixie's old stores and high prices to some available better grocery shopping options. The success was experienced by WinCo after expanding into the Utah market. The company rocketed up 17 positions on the world's largest retail list. Uring year 2012 there were some other big supermarket chains that lost their big competitive ground. They were Albertson's, Stater Bros., and Roundy's. Those respectively fell 24, 23, and 17 positions on the world's largest ranking list. With a lot of grocery shopping options around, each of these companies happened to struggle with remaining relevant and competitive to a loyal niche audience. Let's remind that all this information is based on the list of U.S. supermarket retail chains ranked on the 2012 Global Powers of Retailing list. These supermarket chains from the list were ranked as the "biggest" because they had the highest annual sales figures, according to revenue figures for 2010, which the companies reported. The complete list of the largest U.S. supermarket chains contains two columns of numbers. The number in the left column is the global ranking number assigned to the company, when the right column contains company's revenue which is compared to other top retail organizations worldwide.
