The Toyota Corolla is one of the best-selling cars in the world—it’s such a favorite that one unit is sold every 40 seconds. It’s solid and reliable, but unfortunately (and motoring enthusiasts agree) it’s quite dull. There’s nothing exciting about it—and nowadays, to stay in the game, you have to have something up your sleeve to make sure that consumers stay interested in you. So it was about time that the trusty Corolla had a facelift, and what a makeover it is! Granted, the makeover is still only just a concept that’s meant to be incorporated into the design of the 2014 Corolla, but so far it’s looking good. Named the Toyota Corolla Furia, the show car in a fiery orange finish sported an edgier, more aggressive style that’s completely different from the soft, bland designs of the previous models. It was introduced during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 14, 2013. The last time Corolla was redesigned was in 2008; it’s clearly due for an overhaul—and a new marketing strategy. The company has decided to appeal to the younger generation of consumers, who have their eyes set on sporty and stylish models such as the Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus. Toyota is careful, however, not to alienate their older and loyal customer base. The Furia features a blacked-out grille similar to Lexus cars and is slightly narrower, longer, and lower than the current model. It has flared fenders, LED headlights and taillights, 19-inch alloy wheels, and carbonfiber panels from the front bumper and side skirts to the rear diffuser and spoiler, and it’s made to look as if it’s in motion even when parked. According to Toyota Division General Manager Bill Fay, the Toyota Corolla Furia Concept is an initial indicator of where the company’s compact car design may lead in the coming years. The design language used for the Furia is Iconic Dynamism, which creates a more aggressive and confident look to appeal to youthful buyers. Expect dramatic design and elements of modern technology to be blended in the new design. The company is still keeping things hush-hush with regard to the new model’s technical specifications such as engine displacement, fuel economy, horsepower, and powertrain. The modern elements of technology that will be incorporated into the new model remain to be seen as well, but it’s safe to assume they may be installing the current “standard” when it comes to modern auto tech: a navigation system, rearview camera, full-color monitor, and even assisted parking. Even the date of its final model release hasn’t been disclosed, but motoring enthusiasts and analysts predict that the new Corolla will be made available on or before the latter months of 2013 for the 2014 model year. Whenever it will be, we’re sure it will be a welcome change from the drab (but very reliable) versions of the previous years. It’s true that reputation alone can’t sell a car if it doesn’t look appealing, so it’s good that the redesigned Toyota Corolla will be gracing the world soon, and most assuredly gain more fans in the process.
