The Internet has, without a doubt, streamlined our lives. These invasive products, often referred to as “spyware,” are effective at letting managers know which websites are being visited by which employees, but they don’t address the real issue at the heart of the matter: a lack of employee motivation. Just think of it this way: If your employees are truly motivated to do their jobs to the best of their ability, the Internet would hold no fascination or temptation. So the problem that really needs to be addressed is how you can more effectively motivate your employees. Employee Internet monitoring software may actually do more harm than good when it comes to employee motivation, because once your workers discover that you’re using this invasive means of monitoring their activity – and they will find out eventually – they will no doubt resent your “spying” on them. This resentment, in turn, will lead to an even greater lack of motivation on their part. Using any type of monitoring software will only serve to make the problem worse. Remember that the real issue is employee motivation, so in order to make sure your workers are as productive as possible, you’ll need to provide them with effective incentives to do their jobs better. Once they have that, they’ll be productive no matter what kind of Internet access they have.
