Vent-free fireplaces burn gas instead of wood. Burning gas creates less smoke and off-gases than burning wood and saves you from purchasing and loading palates of firewood. However, potential problems with vent-free fireplaces can result in a polluted air environment and cause an over damp home. In some states, vent-free fireplaces are actually illegal to install in certain circumstances. Air Quality Perhaps the strongest argument against and problem with vent-free fireplaces is their potential ability to contaminate your home's air quality. While gas does burn more efficiently, it still creates carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide. Because the fireplace does not vent to the outside, these gases are pushed into your home. Much like leaving a gas stove on all day, running your vent-free fireplace all day can contaminate your home and cause short- and long-term health concerns, including carbon monoxide poisoning, which can lead to death. For this reason, most supplier or manufacturers recommend short operating times. Manufacturers have also begun including an Oxygen Detection Safety pilot (ODS) in their fireplaces, which will turn off the gas when it detects that the oxygen in the room has dropped to unsafe levels. Regardless, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends installing appliances that vent to the outside whenever possible. Water Vapor Vent-free fireplaces do not have a flue, which generally prevents moisture from leaving the fireplace and home. Instead, a vent-free fireplace circulates and expels the moist and hot air into your home. If you live in a dry climate, such as Utah or Arizona, this extra moisture is an added benefit; but if you live in a normally humid climate, such as Louisiana or New York, excess moisture can cause mold, mildew, peeling wallpaper or rotten wood. Legality As of 2010, it is legal to install vent-free fireplaces and sink in almost all states. However, certain states, such as California, Minnesota and Wisconsin, have restrictions on their use. Some counties and cities, such as New York City, also have restrictions on their use. Most states no not allow these fireplaces as the only source of heat for any room and completely ban them in bathrooms and bedrooms, according to the EPA. Always check with your local government's building representative to determine your area's installation regulations.
