In the world of soundproofing, there tend to be two generic needs. One is the anxious home/office owner, worried too much sound is bothering those around them. But the other client is the music room owner - wanting both the reduced sound for neighbours but also a sound quality in the room itself. Here some acoustic treatment and soundproofing can come together. If you're an aspiring musician, or maybe a music teacher looking to create a music room at home then effective solutions are vital to make you feel comfortable and create as best a solution as possible. For this, acoustic insulation is often the way forward. Sound travels by both air and vibrations so a room can react in a number of different ways. Soundproofing solutions absorbed and deflect sound - removing impact areas and insulating from sound. The first thing to consider the room you're planning to use. Unless you live in a music studio or have the luxury of wide open spaces, choice may be limited and the room won't be pre-designed for this use. Here, Maxiboard can be a good tool. Fixed onto resistant bars around the room, Maxiboard creates a partially independent skin for the wall which absorbs a great deal of sound and vibration. A good installation of Maxiboard shouldn't remove too much space as it's designed to be fitted 6cm from the wall - hardly losing any room area. Another option is Acoustic foam. Fixed in curves on your wall it removes smooth surfaces and absorbs a lot of the sound produced. This is a lower cost but equally effective solution. When someone first considers soundproofing they often think of egg-boxes as this is a common myth. The reality is egg-boxes can help to break up a reflective surface, however they lack the necessary mass to effectively attenuate all but the weakest sounds. Acoustic foam provides that density and can be a great solution. If you're going for foam or even Absorbent panels make sure acoustics aren't compromised for the best sound. The other area of soundproofing to consider is the floor. Especially for vibration based sound like that which comes from drums this is vital. Acoustic surfaces like Maxideck acoustic flooring can provide good solutions - reducing the noise from the impact of sound and also that in the air. Whatever the solution you go for, ask questions and be prepared to share your problems. It's unlikely no-one has faced it before.
