The Panasonic Viera has been the TV of choice for many home entertainment perfectionists for a while now. With razor-sharp picture definition, high contrast and smooth frame rate, the Viera has earnt its place at the top. However the Viera brand isn’t restricted to plasma. The consumer who can afford a few extra pounds expense will probably keep one eye toward plasma for years to come. But LCD screens are also part of the Viera line-up, giving some hint that Panasonic consider them worthy of the same branding. Liquid Crystal Displays have come a long way since the school calculators of yesteryear. The resolution and colour range of LCD technology used to have an Achilles heel around the reproduction of some greens and blues but no longer. And just when you thought that your TV choice had been greatly simplified by the demise of old tube sets and analogue tuners, LED has come along and is grabbing market share. For a long time LED was associated with such grand designs as the large advertising panels you find at Piccadilly Circus. Now though, it is being used in large screens for home TVs – and the results are good. With other developments like 4K ultra-HD set to make 1080p look like a 40s news reel, perhaps you’re best off just spending the most you can afford and not worrying about how long it is before your set is eclipsed.
