DIY Roof Repair In Albuquerque

Home Improvement
The rooftop of a home is designed to meet very specific needs. Roofing can vary depending on where you live, and it is mainly due to the climate zones and annual precipitation. You'll notice that in northern cities in America, shingles are the most common type of roofing, as well as metal sheet roofing. The heavy snowfall requires a very tough material that is waterproof and can handle the weight of thick layers of snow. Often the snowfall requires a person to climb on top of the house in order to remove the snow so the roofing material must be durable to withstand the weight of a person.

In warmer climates we often see Terracotta roofing. It's the arched orange colored roofing layers that often go well with stucco walls. Terracotta is great for keeping off the heat of the day. In the southwestern states of America it has become a standard and gives the home a Mexican culture style to the design of the house. Since the roofing bares so much weight in protecting us from the elements, it is imperative that should something go wrong, roof repair in Albuquerque should happen as quickly as possible. Now, having said that, it is also imperative that proper precautions be taken into account when doing roof repair in Albuquerque. The rooftop can be dangerous due to the slope and height of the structure. Falling off the roof is a very common accident and can cause major injuries or even death.

Some safety tips if you are looking at doing your own roof repair in Albuquerque. Always work on the rooftop on a sunny day when the roof is completely dry. Any precipitation or moisture can cause you to slip or tumble down the roof. For very steep sloped rooftops, using a latter or scaffolding system is wise. Also, the best shoes for gripping on a rooftop are rubber souls. The rubber has a high level of friction that grips very nicely. And finally, take note of any power lines that may cross over the rooftop or attach directly to it for home power.

Now, should any of these details make you nervous or worrisome, it is best to have a professional do the work. There are many companies that will do Albuquerque roof repair for you.

The first step in doing the repair however, is locating it. This can sometimes be a difficult task. You know the roof is leaking typically because of water spots on the ceiling. But, this can be misleading because the water sometimes trickles along attic trusses for several feet or even several yards. So the leak may not be directly above the water mark on the ceiling. The best thing to do is begin a thorough inspection of the roof. Checking around typical leak areas such as the boarder around any ventilation pipes that may be protruding through the surfacing. Check for damaged areas of the rooftop which can visibly be noticed where shingles or slats are missing. Checking where 2 different roof angles meet is another hot spot for leaks. The constant dumping of water from one angle to the other, is sometimes the source of a higher rate of decay on that portion of the rooftop.

Once you locate the leak, the next steps depend on what type of rooftop you have. All roofing materials are designed to have a 2 deep water prevention system based on overlapping and roofing seal. The overlap materials (be they shingles or terracotta) are designed to transfer water in a downward path from one piece to the other. Should any layer of shingle or slat be missing, the water has an opportunity to drip into an unprotected portion of the roof and so if you find any missing shingles it is usually the point of the leak. This is the portion of the roof that must be replaced along with a number of the surrounding shingles.
