CEREC stands for Chairside Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. A CEREC dentist performs procedures that restore your teeth with a ceramic dental prostheses. A Computer Assisted Design is used to produce a crown that can be fitted perfectly to your existing teeth. A CEREC dentist can produce a permanent crown for you in just one day by using this method. The usual method of creating a crown is done in two different office visits. During the first visit, the tooth is shaved down. An impression is made and sent to a laboratory that will create a permanent crown out of ceramic or porcelain. A temporary crown is placed until the permanent crown is ready. During a CEREC treatment, the permanent crown is ready the same day. The first thing that is done during this procedure is the photographing of the teeth that are being worked on, if the new crowns are to be made to resemble the existing teeth. A contrast medium is sprayed onto the teeth so a 3D camera can take adequate pictures of the teeth. The CEREC dentist needs to prepare the teeth first by removing some of the enamel of the tooth to allow for room for the crowns to be placed. After the enamel has been removed, a contrast medium is again sprayed onto the teeth and more photographs are taken. The CEREC dentist will then take photographs of the teeth that will be uploaded to the 3D CAD software. The computer software generates a design for the new crowns, based on the images of the sculpted teeth and what the new restoration teeth should look like. The design is then sent to a milling unit that transforms a block of ceramic into the design made for the crowns. The restoration crown is then bonded to the existing teeth with a cement made out of resin. The milling portion of the restoration process only takes a short period of time. It can take between four and twenty minutes depending on the amount of detail of the restoration. After the milling is complete, the dentist will make sure that it was done correctly before permanently securing it to your natural teeth by bonding. He will check your bite and be sure that you like the appearance of your new teeth. The entire process from beginning to end should only take less than two hours. If you are considering having this treatment done to restore your teeth, you should understand the pros and cons of the CEREC technique. The most favorable pro is that the entire procedure is done in one short office visit. This not only saves you time, it can save you money as well. You will not need a temporary crown with this procedure, which saves you discomfort in addition to expense. Ceramic crowns made from a mill are more durable than other types of composite crowns. Since there is no lab handling your restoration prosthesis, the cost should be a bit less overall. The primary cause of concern with having a CEREC treatment, is due to the fact that the teeth are made from one block of ceramic. This does not enable for the subtle color gradient that is necessary to make the prosthetic look completely natural. This is only an issue for the front teeth, but a skilled cerec dentist can make the prosthetic look more natural. Crowns can be made for the posterior and anterior teeth. Partial crowns can also be made. In addition to crowns, the CEREC system can also mill inlays, onlays and veneers. If you are interested in having this procedure done, it is important that the dentist who does the procedure is trained to use the CEREC equipment.
