Global roaming charges aren’t just terrifically expensive, but they often come as a surprise. That is, many mobile phone customers don’t realize that they’re incurring these charges when they make calls in foreign nations. So what’s to be done about this situation? One solution would be to deactivate your mobile phone’s Global Roaming capabilities just before you leave home. (You might have to call your mobile phone company in order to do so.) Unfortunately, for many world travelers, abstaining from calls, or severely limiting phone time, is never an option. Another idea would be to sign up for a prepaid mobile phone package. With most prepaid packages, you can make and receive calls, text message, surf the web, and use voicemail the same way you always do. And you won’t have to sign a contract with a carrier, either, which means you won’t face a termination fee should you be unhappy with your service. With prepaying there’s also no such thing as an overage fee, nor do you have to worry about avoiding calls at certain, more expensive times of the day. In addition, paying in advance for mobile phone activity is a good idea for people with poor credit history or no credit history to speak of – most teenagers and many young adults would fall into this latter category – as no credit checks are involved. Whenever you pay ahead of time for mobile phone usage, you should always keep an eye on how much data and how many minutes you have remaining. If you’re almost finished, yet you know you’ll need more minutes or data, you should call your carrier and order extra time. Otherwise, you’ll risk running out, at which point not only will you not be able to make calls, but you won’t be able to receive any calls. And that could be problematic in the event of an emergency. (You’ll know you’ve run out, by the way, when you try to make a call and all you hear is the sound of a special tone.) At the same time, however, you don’t want to be too conservative with your phone usage because, after all, you did pay for those minutes and data, and most likely you’ll lose whatever you don’t use. That is, most carriers don’t allow prepaid minutes or data to carry over, and will not grant refunds for what’s not been used. It’s important to realize, too, that those customers who use their mobile phones the most often – for instance, a person who’s on the phone seemingly around the clock for business reasons – would probably save money by signing a traditional phone contract. Also, it’s sometimes the case that more advanced mobile phone features, such as Bluetooth and testing that utilizes photos, aren’t available with prepaid plans.
