Stone tiles are a very popular interior decorating scheme most commonly found in bathrooms and kitchens. This is because they are waterproof and easy to clean, which is important in those two areas of the house. Slate is one of the most popular stones used for tiling, as it has a unique pattern and is easy to make into tile form. Installing slate wall tile requires a fair amount of time and preparation, but it is not particularly difficult. Instructions as follows: Firstly, put down the tarpaulin or waterproof sheet under the stone wallyou are tiling to prevent any adhesive from getting on the floor. Secondly, starting from the bottom, apply adhesive to the wall and spread it using the adhesive spreader. It is best to apply only enough adhesive for a few tiles at a time, so it does not dry out. Thirdly, attach the tile to the wall and add in the spacers to allow for grouting later; make sure each tile is secure before moving onto the next tile. Fourthly, clean any tile adhesive from the tiles using a damp cloth. This needs to be done as soon as possible, because the adhesive is more difficult to remove when dry. Fifthly, leave the tile adhesive to dry overnight, or as specified by the supplier or manufacturer's guidelines. Sixthly, use a palate knife to remove the spacers once the tile adhesive is dry. Seventhly, use the grouting tools to apply the grout between all the gaps that the spacers have left between the tiles; allow the grout to dry as specified by the manufacturer. Eighthly, use a damp cloth to clean any grout from the slate. This should be done as soon as possible, because grout is more difficult to remove when dry. Tips & Warnings Tiles can be cut if you need a partial tile in a corner. This requires a special machine, which can be rented or purchased from a home-improvement store. Make sure you buy extra tiles in case one falls off or cracks after installation. Individual tiles are difficult to replace after the initial purchase, because tile designs tend to change regularly and do not stay in production very long.
