Granite surfaces are classy, durable, and easy to maintain. Granite is available in many color variations and can be used as a tile or slab application. Rounded, beveled edges is the standard finish with a slab counter top application. The price of granite counter top slabs range anywhere from $50 to $120 a square foot. Factors, such as edge and backsplash selections, can also increase the price. Some wholesale manufacturers will sell granite slabs for as low as $30 a square foot. This, of course, does not include installation. granite block is less expensive, ranging from $20 to $50 per square foot. Pricing your granite will involve getting estimates from several granite manufacturers and comparing prices for all of the various options that are available. Instructions as follows: Firstly, measure the length and width of the area to be covered with the granite slab for an accurate square footage. Slabs are most commonly used in counter top applications and priced by the square foot. Secondly, decide on the edge finish for the granite slab and the number and location of seams. These factors will also affect the price of the granite slab. Thirdly, call several granite manufacturers and give them the measurements for the granite slab. Also provide them with information about any special selections you desire for edge finishes and the backsplash. Be sure to inquire what the price per square foot is and whether installation is included in that price or not. You may also obtain granite estimates online from granite retailers when you provide them with measurements. Fourthly, multiply the price per square foot given by the granite retailer by the square footage measurement from Step 1. Multiplying the length by the width will give you the square footage. To figure the square footage area of the counter, it is easiest to divide the space into rectangular shapes and figure the area separately, then add the areas together. This will give you a rough estimate on the cost of a granite slab. Fifthly, measure the space to be tiled with granite. Multiply the length of the area by the width of the area to obtain the number of square feet being covered. Sixthly, choose tile options. It is best to choose a couple of different types of tile when comparing costs. Most tile comes in a box and will cover a certain amount of square footage. Seventhly, divide the total square footage of the area to be tiled by the square footage each box will cover. This equals the total number of boxes of granite tile you will need for the project. Be sure to add about 5 percent to the total when doing tile work to account for waste or breakage. Eighthly, multiply the number of boxes by the cost per unit at several local home improvement centers or other granite retailer. This gives you the total cost of the tile. The cost estimated here does not include mortar, grout, or sealing materials. Tips & Warnings Thinner cut pieces of granite slabs can be purchased to save on cost. Take care during installation though, as they can be more fragile, especially around the sink hole in counter top applications.
