As childhood obesity and diabetes rates are skyrocketing in the US,many schools are eliminating physical education classes. A nationalstudy in the American Journal of Public Health reports that specific and required state legislation with regardto PE times could be a crucial tool to ensure that children meetthe daily recommendations of physical activity. The investigators evaluated data from the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention's most recent School Health Policies andPrograms Survey in order to establish whether public schools instates with specific and strict physical education laws taught moreweekly PE time. They assessed a total of 410 schools, which theypreviously categorized depending on their state's PE timerequirements scores as determined by the Classification of LawsAssociated with School Students (C.L.A.S.S. class.cancer.org)scoring system. The findings revealed that schools in states with strict specificrequirement laws taught, on average, over 27 more minutes of PE perweek at elementary school level and over 60 more minutes per weekat middle school levels than schools in states with non-specific,i.e. weak laws. In comparison with schools at elementary and middleschool level that had neither PE laws nor requirements, those withstrict PE laws had on average over 40 minutes of PE at elementarylevel and 60 more minutes at middle school level. The investigators explained: "Decline in physical activity is most pronounced as childrentransition from elementary and middle school to high school whetherphysical activity is measured by self-report or by objectivemeasurement. Similarly, there is an increase in sedentary behavioras children transition from primary to secondary school.....children do not compensate for less PE in school by addingphysical activity outside of school, and PE may an importantcontributor to overall physical activity... [since] average PE timeis below school health guidelines...." They conclude saying that statutory state PE laws in Americanelementary and middle schools should list a requirement for PE andspecify a minimum time allocated for PE to address gaps inchildren's physical activity as well as current school healthguidelines.
