Leadership is a tricky skill to tackle. Some people are born with the skills they need to be a great leader. Others learn what they need to learn to be an effective leader. But with knowledge and advice, anyone can improve their leadership skills. Joe Jedlowski has been in a leadership position for much of his career. He is currently working as the Vice President of Operations at a senior living care organization. He has held numerous management positions before his current one as well. He has the experience and knowledge of leadership that can help make a better leader. Here are some tips that can help anyone become a better leader: 1. Help Others Figure Out Problems - A good leader will help guide those he leads to figure out answers to their own problems - he won't just give them the answer. A solution that comes from the individual is much better than one that is given. 2. Think Solutions, not Problems - When you discuss problems, don't talk solely about the problem and all of the negativity that surrounds it. Discuss the issue in terms of solutions and how a team will solve a problem. 3. Provide Positive Feedback - It's important when providing feedback to make sure that there is more positive than negative. A leader never wants to make whomever they are leading uncomfortable or upset through their feedback; they will have no reason to improve if that's the case. Positive reinforcement works! 4. Listen - One of the most important traits of a good leader is their ability to listen, and listen well. A leader can think he's doing a great job by dictating and ordering people around, but in reality they are avoiding their responsibilities by not listening to the concerns of those they lead. 5. Follow Up with Those You Lead - Whenever you have a conversation with someone you are responsible for, make sure you make a note of it and follow through with any agreements or changes you have made with that individual. This will show that you care about the people you are leading and make for a more productive team. Hopefully these tips will help you to be a better leader in the future. There are lots of resources available to leaders and potential leaders online and through mentors. Consider checking out other resources to bring your leadership skills to the next level.
