Whether you’re a keen and regular cyclist, or only go out now and again, it’s essential that you keep on top of bike maintenance. If your bike is not in fully working order, then you’ll be severely let down on your cycle rides, and the last thing you need is to be caught in the hills, in the middle of nowhere, far away from home, with a faulty bike and no mobile phone reception so you’re unable to call anyone to help. You can take your bike to a specialist to give it a good looking over every now and again to ensure t’s fully working. There are also a few things you can do at home too. It’s a great idea to make sure that your bicycle tyres have enough air in them. Check the tread of them regularly as they can wear down fast. Once the tread is completely worn down, you’ll lose the essential grip on the road, meaning that it’ll be harder to come to a standstill each time you apply the brakes. Check for pins or other damage to your tyres too. The last thing you need is to encounter a flat tyre when you’re still miles from home. You can buy mini puncture repair kits that fit in to your rucksack and will enable you to temporarily fix your bike, at least until you get it home and can take it to a specialist to fix. As well as keeping your bike in tip top condition, you also need to look after yourself. Buy a bicycle helmet to help protect your head at all times when you’re cycling. Don’t run the risk of falling off your bike and seriously damaging your head for the sake of looking cool. There are a number of different coloured helmets to choose from, so you can pick your favourite colour. Wear your helmet with pride, in the knowledge that you’re being safe whilst you’re on your bike ride. Knee pads are another great safety mechanism to protect your knee caps from bruising. You may not think that you look cool, but you’ll know for sure that you’re safe, which is a lot more important. If you wear baggy trousers when you cycle, buy some trouser clips to help prevent trouser legs getting caught in the spokes. You can even buy trouser clips with reflective surfaces so that people can see you coming if you’re cycling at night. Bicycle maintenance is important – buy your repair kit and bicycle helmets from Halfords to ensure you stay safe at all times.
