As we hit the dead of winter, it is best to make sure your roof is up to the challenge. We are aware that winter conditions can be hazardous on the roadways, but did you consider how serious the potential pitfalls that ice and snow can have on a roof as it begins to build? Being in St. Louis roofing, we have seen far too many problems comes from unprepared homeowners. Here are some tips to make sure you roof continues to withstand this wintery blast: • Clean Gutters – One of the easiest ways to prevent problems is to keep ice from damning in the gutters. Ice damning happens when there are impediments in the gutters and downspouts, which keep ice and snow from passing through to the ground below. This is a problem because ice can come down unpredictably, resulting in serious injury. Ice damns can also be the cause of water pouring into the home and ruining painted surfaces. • Extend and bury drain spouts - It’s important to run water five feet from from the foundation of your home. Refusing to do so can lead to the softening of the ground around your home foundation that could lead to the soil separating from the foundation itself. • Disconnect garden hoses - Unscrew and drain the remaining water from your garden hose before the freezing weather occurs. This will stop ice from building up in the pipes. This step is essential to prevent pipes bursting when the weather dips below freezing. • Inspect and seal roof openings - If you have skylights or sun tunnels, make sure that the weather stripping around these things is in good repair and ready for the winter. These simple tips can help prevent many headaches in the future. Taking simple steps to keep up on the maintenance of your home, you can sleep soundly in the knowledge that you’ve done your best to avoid needless and costly damage to your house. We know too well that winter weather can be unpredictable, which is why it’s so important to do your roof a favor and prepare it for the worst Mother Nature can throw at it.
