Anyone who has ever been to Chamonix can tell you that it is a village surrounded by unparalleled beauty. All around the small settlement (of fewer than 5,000 permanent residents) are the towering peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges, home to the oldest ski resort in France, the Aiguille du Midi. People travel from connections in Torino and Geneva to Chamonix to experience these beautiful natural wonders, but also to see the region's unique cable car network and train, the Mont Blanc Express, which gives its passengers easy access to some of the Rhone-Alpes mountain's most spectacular scenery. This article will talk about the different cable car systems you will find in the area, and then give information about the best ways to travel from Torino or Geneva to Chamonix. The Cable Car System Though Chamonix is mainly known for its ski resorts, the village and valley have many other interesting attractions that bring people from far and wide to experience them first hand. One of the more unique aspects of the region is its cable car system. In 1955, the construction of a cable car that reached the peak of Aiguille du Midi (3842m or 12,605ft) made it the world's highest. Even now, 50 years later, it is still one of the highest in the world. From the village centre, it is possible to ride a gondola lift to Plan Praz (1999m) then from there, hop on the cable car to La Brevent, at an elevation of 2525m. At the top of this cable car there is an amazing restaurant with the fitting name, La Panoramique, which offers incredible views of the Mont Blanc Massif. There is an entire network of linked cable cars throughout the region, which may be used to explore the more mountainous areas without requiring any strenuous walking. You can take a cable car from Entreves in Italy up to to Pointe Helbronner (11,358ft or 3,462m), and in the summer it's possible to traverse the entire Mont Blanc Massif by cable car. Trains Although it's difficult to get from Geneva to Chamonix using only rail (it is possible, however, see the next section) the Mont Blanc Express can used as a sight-seeing car and a way to explore nearby villages, such as St. Gervais Les Bains. Really, though, the quickest way to get from Geneva to Chamonix is by road using a private airport shuttle service. This service is quick, convenient and very reasonably priced. Travelling by train is possible, but it requires four separate legs to the journey and ends up looking something like this: Geneva to Eaux-Vives to Annemasse to St. Gervais Les Bains to Chamonix.
