We are all familiar with the 3Rs - reduce, reuse and recycle. Packing materials can actually be re-used over and over again if you take good care of them. Re-using them not only save us money, it also helps to protect the environment, reduce waste and energy. Reusable packing materials may cost more than non-reusable ones, but that are made of much more durable materials and they are able to handle any abuse thrown at them. What are some packing materials that can be reused? Bubble wraps Bubble wraps are no stranger to anything requiring packing. Bubble wraps help to provide great cushioning to fragile items, reducing the risk of damage while in transport. Bubble wraps are also useful for things that are not fragile. Knowing that your item is wrapped with bubble wrap sets your mind at ease. However, the temptation of puncturing all those air pockets are so great and once the bubble wrap is punctured, it loses its protective capabilities. So stop all those itchy fingers today and do not puncture the air pockets! This way, the bubble wrap can be reused over and over again, saving you money in the process. Packing peanuts Packing peanuts help to fill up excess spaces and voids in the box and prevent your items from moving about during transportation. Minimal movements reduce the chances of damages and ensure that your items remain in pristine condition. Packing peanuts are cheap packing materials and most people tend to discard them after each usage due to their low cost. However, packing peanuts can be reused over and over again and instead of discarding them, you should store them for future usage. You can also pass them to your friends or relatives! Plastic moving boxes When you think about moving, you think about carton boxes. Carton boxes are cheap and readily available either from self storage providers or even places like your friendly supermarket or electrical store. However, carton boxes are not exactly durable and most of them will degrade after one usage. This results in a lot of waste being generated and you will need to spend money to buy them every single time. Instead of carton boxes, consider using plastic moving boxes. They are slightly more expensive but they are much more durable. Plastic moving boxes are made of thermoset polymers which are high in mechanical strength. Their amorphous nature allows you to easily see through and know what are the items inside. Best of all, they are chemically inert and you can use them easily for years, saving you a lot of money in the long run and doing your part for the environment. Whenever possible, always try to use reusable packing materials as they are much more environmentally friendly and durable, giving you an added sense of security. Reusable packing materials may cost more than the usual ones but in the long run, you are going to save more money. Running out of space at home?
