If you are going out of town, placing your pet at an Indiana dog and cat boarding facility ensures they get the care and attention they need while you are away. However, not all facilities are run the same. There are slight differences that may make you prefer one facility over another. Asking the facility questions is the best way to find the right facility for your pet. Here is a list of questions to ask an Indiana dog and cat boarding facility. 1. Are Pets Required to Be Up To Date on Their Shots and Immunizations? When you are looking for a dog and cat boarding facility, you want to find one that only takes pets that are up-to-date on their immunizations. This ensures that pets coming into the facility does not have rabies, parvovirus, distemper or other diseases that pets are immunized against. 2. Are Pets Checked to Ensure They Are Healthy Before They Are Accepted Into the Facility? It is very common for pets to be quickly checked by a vet or trained staff member before they can be left with an Indiana dog and cat boarding facility. This ensures sick pets are not left at a facility and do not infect other pets. The exam includes checking the animals eyes, ears, mouth and overall well-being. Always look for a facility that does this. If a facility does not do this, they may be accepting pets with infections, kennel cough or other illnesses that can be contagious to your pet. Most facilities also do a flea check and if the pet has fleas, will require the pet to receive a flea bath before they will be boarded. 3. What Size Cage is My Pet Kept in? Some facilities will assign your pet a cage, based on its size. Other facilities will allow you to pick out a size for your pet. Generally, the bigger the cage, the more expensive the boarding fee. However, some owners don't mind paying a bit more to ensure their pet has a bit more space. Always ask this question so you understand what size your pet is being assigned and if you can spend more to get them more room. If you have an older cat who likes to lounge around, a small cage may not be that bad. But if you have a puppy who likes to run and jump, you may want to upgrade them to something larger. 4. How Often Is My Pet Taken Out of the Cage? At a minimum, your pet should be taken out of the cage once every six hours to go potty. Aside from this, many facilities may take your animal out once or twice per day for exercise, for a walk, for a bath or to clean the cage. Other facilities charge you extra for each of these services. If you want your dog walked for 30 minutes per day, you pay extra for it. You need to ask this question so you know how often your pet will be allowed out, and whether or not you need to pay for additional walks or services. 5. Is There a Staff Member Around 24 Hours a Day? There should always be a staff member around 24 hours a day. The reasoning behind this is that you want someone there in case your pet gets ill or needs emergency care. Unfortunately, many Indiana dog and cat boarding facilities do not have a staff member checking on the animals overnight. Look for a facility that does just incase there is an emergency and your pet needs care or immediate attention.
