All over Uganda, Japanese used cars are becoming all the rage, along with reality talent shows, fashion, and sports such as baseball and softball. Reading up on current events in Uganda is interesting because there is so much going on in all aspects of Ugandan life. There are many attention-grabbing stories on local and national politics, entertainment and showbiz, business, health, sports, and lifestyle. For now we will focus on the automotive industry and the Ugandan motorsport scene. Best of the Mbarara Rally One of the biggest stories in the world of motorsports now is the victory of Ponsiano ‘Maffu Maffu’ Lwakataka at the recently-concluded Mbarara Pine Ridge Rally on the 10th of February 2013. Lwakataka maneuvered his Subaru N8 through numerous and highly-challenging obstacles to finish the course at 44 minutes, besting all of the other drivers. Less than fifteen made it to the finish line at 461.36 km. The Mbarara Rally is one of, if not the most popular of the National Rally Championship (NRC) events. It is particularly notable for being the first and the most challenging race of all the six NRC events. Those who compete in the Mbarara rally and place first in the rankings have been known to make it to the top of the NRC rankings as well. If you will recall, 2012’s NRC title champion, Jas Mangat was also the Mbarara winner for that year; and the same is true for Susan Muwonge, who won the title in 2011. Would the luck continue with Lwakataka as well? He is feeling very optimistic and hopes to win the NRC for the third time in his career. He has already won the title in 2005 and 2007. Motorsport enthusiasts who have dreams of making it big on the road would do well to practice their driving in Uganda Japanese used cars. There are many Japanese brands of sports cars including the Subaru Impreza WRX N8 which is a favorite among racers, including Lwakataka. His unit is not new at all but you can see that it was modified and well-maintained by his team, allowing him to successfully overcome obstacles to make it to the top. The secret to the Impreza’s success in the racing stage is its light but sturdy chassis. Just a few days before Lwakataka’s win, Ronald Ssebuguzi’s Mitsubishi Evo9 kicked dust in the Champions Sprint event at Garuga on Boxing Day, coming up victorious and beating Shaffik Seemujju by over four minutes. Ssebuguzi’s ride, a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, is another favorite among motorsport fans. The four-wheel drive high-performance sedan and its 2.0-liter, turbocharged engines can be found among Uganda’s Japanese used cars. The Evo has won many awards from various consumer, motorsport, and media establishments, such as “2005 All-Star” by Automobile Magazine in the US; “2009 Best New Technology” award by the Canadian Automobile Journalists Association; and DAVE TV’s 2008 “Sports Car of the Year”. The motorsport mania in the country has built up a renewed appreciation for Uganda’s Japanese used cars. Thanks to the secondhand-car market, racing enthusiasts won’t have to spend a lot just to have high-performance sporty sedans like the ones that Ssebuguzi and Lwakataka drive.
