About 80,000 villages in India have no electricity. Kerosene and candles are what give these villagers a light of hope. Since Independence in 1947, India’s energy production ability has grown manifold; the electricity sector in India had an installed capacity of 210.936 GW as of November 2012, the world's fifth largest. But, still there are millions in the country who’ve no access to electricity. Lately, India, like the rest of the countries, has shifted its attention towards some new possible sources of energy, which are collectively known as, ‘renewable energy sources’. Hydel, Wind Energy, Biogas/Biomass, Bio-fuels, Solar Energy are among the popular renewable energy sources. The share of RE in the energy sector is 10.63% of total generation capacity of India. The figure is, obviously, not impressive. There is a lot that needs to be done so as to bridge the energy deficit in the country and to provide electricity to all those 80,000 villages which are still going on without electricity, even after so many years of India’s Independence. Here is a brief on the major renewable sources in the country: Wind Energy In the recent few years, both central as well as state governments are coming out with new economic reforms and policies to promote wind energy production in the country. This has led to the establishment of a significant number of wind power companies in India. The domestic policy support has led India to become the country with the fifth largest installed wind power capacity in the world. Of course, wind power companies are eyeing for a lot more. Solar Energy India is densely populated and has high solar insolation; this is an ideal combination for using solar power in India. Now that the country is facing a serious problem of depletion of essential resources, sunlight has become an all the more important asset for the country. The need of the hour is to develop more and more new power projects. Hydel The power sector has some good news here! Hydroelectric power can solve the energy woes of India to a great extent. In fact, the potential for the hydroelectric power in the country is one of the greatest in the world. But, it’s all in its infancy. Biogas/Biomass has also a huge potential to transform India’s power dreams into reality. The stage has been set; what needs to be seen is how renewable energy producers such as wind power companies, solar power companies and the rest perform.
