When it comes to self help or motivational books there are a lot to choose from. Motivational topics range in variety. Search the internet and you will find a motivational website covering every topic that is known to man. Search even farther and you will find a motivational book, article or blog giving you information regarding the subject. Success, wealth, and better relationships are a few of the topics that top the list; this list just scratches the surface. People in general want something or someone to tell them why they behave in a negative manner, and more importantly, how to fix it. We look for that hidden something that will tell us why we act the way we do. Surely there must be a reason why I need help. Or, I can't possibly be the blame for the failure that I suffer. There must be a program I can follow to set me on the right path. Part of the reason why there are so many different types of motivational books available is that with the wide diversity of people in the world, we fail to remember that we are in essence all the same. We all have the same basic fears, feelings and shortcomings. The individual self help books try to answer each of the different anxieties. For all their differences, many titles have a lot in common: they present themselves in optimistic terms; they speak directly to the reader in clear language; and they imply an ability to help the reader live a fuller life. Motivational books tend to set us on the course toward understanding, but the path is not an easy one. We as humans absorb information and process it. Many people leave this information in their brain. Those who start out on the journey of self improvement often lose interest in the information and struggle for the staying power to follow one idea to completion. Others start on one path only to find that they found another course to replace the first. Then another idea replaces another. This process repeats itself over and over again until we find ourselves in a state of confusion and self doubt. Once this happens any direction we have followed for self improvement becomes laborious. There is an axiom attributed to Lao-tzu a Chinese philosopher (604 BC - 531 BC) "the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step ". Take the motivational information that you receive and apply it to yourself. Set a primary goal of finishing the task at hand. That is, to read the self help book that you have chosen. Then see if you can apply any of the lessons learned from it to your particular circumstance. Then (and this is the hard part) follow through. Do what is asked of you. Apply the information you have received in the manner in which you were taught. Persistence is the key to self improvement. Give yourself the time and the patience to let the process work. Research your topic. Read more than one self help book. Subscribe to a plethora of information and realize that the process is difficult, but the good thing is, no matter how many times you quit the process you can always start again. The truth is most of us already know in our heart what we have to do; we just want someone to confirm our own thoughts.
