Marble provides any room with the elegance of natural stone. Its glossy shine brightens a room significantly, with its subtle changes in hue adding to the decor in subtle ways. Unfortunately, marble can be a brittle stone, easily breaking on installation unless properly supported. With the correct installation procedure, though, you should be able to lay the slabs onto your walls smoothly to create the look you desire. Instructions as follows: Firstly, clean the stone walls using a sponge and a pH-neutral cleanser. Dampen the sponge with the cleanser only, making sure not to saturate the wall with moisture as you clean. Rinse with clean water, and then pat the surface dry with a clean, dry piece of cloth. Secondly, dull any gloss from paint covering the wall and create a texture for mortar adherence by sanding the wall lightly with 180-grit sandpaper. Wipe the dust raised by the sanding off the wall with the clean cloth. Thirdly, measure the length of the wall with a tape measure and divide the length by half. Place a chalk mark at the midpoint of the wall located at the height of a slate tile plus 1/8-inch above the slab starting area. Place a carpenter’s level at the base of the tiling area on the wall at the mark and while holding it level, draw a horizontal line on the wall with the chalk to mark your first tiling row. Fourthly, use a notched trowel to cover a portion of wall of about 5 square feet with thinset mortar. Begin with the area defined by your marked lines. Mix the mortar in a large bucket with an electric drill and paddle bit, adding water until it’s a peanut butter-like consistency. Turn the trowel on edge at a 45-degree angle. Run the notches through the mortar to create grooves in its surface. Fifthly, press the first slab into the mortar at the midpoint, centered on the midpoint line, and below the level line so that it’s 1/8-inch from the bottom of the tiling surface. Place a 1/8-inch tile spacer beneath the slab to hold it in position and to all other sides of the marble to keep the space between slabs uniform. Place the next slab onto the wall beside it, and continue until you fill the 5-square-foot area. Sixthly, place the carpenter’s level across the slabs to test for level with one another. Raise and lower unlevel slabs as needed by pressing high slabs further into the mortar, and placing additional mortar beneath lower slabs to raise them upwards. Continue placing the marble slabs in 5-foot sections until you cover the entire tiling area. Seventhly, cut the soapstone slab when you need a partial slab for a small edge space using a diamond blade wet saw. Place the slab on the saw platform and make certain the water is flowing along the blade as you make the cut. Slowly cut through the slab with the blade, making starting cuts of 1 inch in each end of the slab and then connecting the two to avoid fracturing the marble. Turn off the blade before removing the partial. Sand the edges of the marble smooth with water-saturated 200-grit wet/dry sandpaper. Use a hole saw to make circular cuts through the marble slab, placing the slab onto a piece of plywood first for support while cutting. Allow the slabs to set for 24 hours before grouting. Eighthly, pull the spacers from between the slabs. Brush a layer of slab and grout sealer onto the slabs to keep the grout from staining the marble. Wait 4 hours for the sealer to dry enough for slab protection. Ninthly, spread the grout over the slabs and into the joints between with the edge of a grout float. Within 15 minutes, remove the grout from the slabs with a damp sponge. Grout all slab joints except those at the edge of the surface and any regularly wet objects, such as a sink or tub. Tenthly, wait an hour, and then wipe the slabs with a clean dry towel to remove any grout residue. Allow the grout and mortar to cure for 24 hours. Eleventh, place a bead of caulk along those joints adjacent to wet areas, and smooth it in place with a wet fingertip. Wait an addition 7 to 10 days for the mortar and grout to finish curing before touching the surface.
