Learning to write for the web is probably the most important skill you can develop as a small business owner. Effective content writing will help you market your products or services online - and do it on a small budget if you can write the content yourself. Even if you decide to outsource, knowing what good web writing looks like will ensure that you get your money's worth. Types of content marketing articles In the world of content marketing, various article types are effective. Some require extensive research and literary expertise and can run to 1,000 words or more in length. They're used to establish your authority as an expert and build your brand identity. But others are shorter and need less in-depth research. They're commonly used to: create backlinks to your website for search result positioning; capitalize on the massive amounts of free traffic that blogs and article directories get, and hopefully attract some of their readers to your article and then to your website via your anchor links. These 'basic article marketing' articles or blog posts need to be informative, entertaining and short (300 - 500 words). They don't need to be literary gems, but they do need to be well-written. They don't require annotated research, but they need to be accurate and cite reputable sources. Web content style Web content requires writing that's casual and easy for the reader to digest, but it must also represent your product in a good light. After all, whenever people read articles online mentioning your company, they'll associate the writing with your brand. Writing articles for content marketing is NOT like writing in high school or college where your teachers rewarded proper grammar and syntax with high grades. Online audiences want to be able to read your articles or blog posts quickly and easily, and enjoy them even if the topic is serious. How to write articles quickly Since the strategy behind content marketing is to distribute plenty of content to a variety of websites around the web, being able to write fast is a useful skill - but only if you can still produce quality content. People who can write good articles quickly, can do it for two basic reasons: They are already experts in their subject area, so can speak and write about the topic easily 'off the cuff'. They spend up-front time researching their topic so thoroughly that they can write convincingly on the topic without having to look at their notes. So the 'secret' to writing articles quickly is to know your subject. If you're not already an expert, take time to do the research. Then practice writing every day, and the speed will come with time. And if you're hiring a writer, find one who is familiar with your target market or who knows how to conduct research using reputable sources. dissertations
