Before the British ruling era started in 1815 it was estimated that there were more than thirty thousand elephants in Sri Lanka. The British colonialists carried on slaughtering and game hunting these majestic creatures driving them towards extinction. This disastrous act prompted the government of Sri Lanka to found the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where a lifeline is provided for both adult and baby elephants who have been lost in the forests. The orphanage is situated between Colombo the commercial capital of Sri Lanka and Kandy, the ancient royal city. Located on a 25 acre land near the Maha Oya River this was started in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Sri Lanka. Most of the baby elephants found are ones who have lost their mothers, where many cases record that the mother was killed. With the help of elephant specialists, a scientific captive-breeding programme has been started and has become the best and most successful captive breeding program for Asian elephants. Among the limited number of elephant orphanages in the world, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage can be considered as one of the best. This place has become one of the major tourist attractions in the country and the location of it has helped to increase the number of visitors as well. If visited around 9 o'clock in the morning the visitors would get the opportunity to witness the event of bottle feeding the babies. It is such a rare site and so interesting to watch. Around 10 am these giant mammals are taken for a bath at the Mahaoya where visitors can watch from the rock-strewn river bank. This is one of the places that are being talked about all around the world. Thousands and thousands of photo clicks have been taken in this location and there are many books written about this amazing site.
