Marble flooring is available in all common tile sizes up to 24 inches square, with the larger sizes generally installed to fit tightly together without grouting. Although slightly more prone to scratching than granite, marble floor tile is typically less expensive and is characterized by a tendency to "age" by developing a patina from use that gains character over time, bringing out more of the marble's color and natural beauty. The procedure for installation insures the marble floor will provide a lasting addition to any home. Instructions as follows: Firstly, perform a preliminary check to make certain that the floor substrate material is securely fastened to the floor and free of dirt or debris. Check to see that any screw heads or other fasteners are flush with the floor's surface. Secondly, measure the width of the area, or the shortest dimension of the room, on both sides, then use a chalk line to mark a center line through the room. Thirdly, spread a row of marble tiles over the length of the room, aligned with the chalked guideline. Begin the row with the first marble tiles placed against the wall at one end, and fit the tiles against each other until a full-size tile will not fit, then measure the remaining space between the leading edge of the last full marble tile and the adjacent wall. Fourthly, divide the measurement for the remaining space in half, then mark this dimension from the adjacent wall at both ends and connect the points using a chalk line. This establishes a guideline for the tile installation for the last row of full-size, or uncut, tiles and equalizes the perimeter cut tiles along the parallel walls. Remove the marble tiles preset for this step. Fifthly, repeat Steps 2, 3 and 4 for the length of the room to define a guideline perpendicular to the first. With this step completed, there is a chalked guideline, offset from all four stone walls, defining the centered area of full marble tiles and equal boundaries of cut tiles. The starting point for the marble tile installation should be the left-hand or right-hand corner opposite the wall containing the room entry doorway, so you will apply the tiles as you work your way out of the room. Sixthly, begin at the starting corner within the chalked guidelines and spread a thin layer of tile adhesive using a notched trowel over an area approximately two full limestone block wide and two full marble tiles long, making certain not to obscure the guideline. Seventhly, set a full piece of marble tile in the adhesive at the starting corner, lining the perpendicular edges of the marble tile with the guidelines, then gently press the tile surface downward to inset the tile into the adhesive. A rubber mallet can be used to gently tap the tile surface if necessary. When the tile is set, use the edge of the notched trowel to smooth any excess tile adhesive that squeezed out from under the tile and remove any adhesive along the edge bordering the cut-tile space. Eighthly, lower the next marble tile in place beside the previous tile, making sure the corners are aligned and the tiles are tight together, then press or tap the tile into place. Lowering the tile straight down prevents adhesive from getting between the tile edges and preventing a tight and proper fit. Use a damp sponge or rag to remove any adhesive from the marble's surface as the tiles are placed. Ninthly, repeat Steps 6, 7 and 8 to complete the first row of full-sized tile along the guideline, then use a long level or straight edge to make certain the row is straight. The joints between the tiles should be tight and the entire row aligned with the guideline. Tenthly, repeat Steps 6, 7 and 8 to install the remaining rows of the full-sized tiles, continuing to check the fit and alignment of the tiles as you progress. Allow the completed area of full-size marble tiles to cure for a minimum of 48 hours prior to proceeding. Eleventh, trim the perimeter cut tile pieces to the necessary width using a tile saw. Wear eye and hand protection during the cutting and follow all the recommended safety precautions for the saw. For cut pieces of marble tile, it is easier to apply the tile adhesive to the back of the tile and then press into place, making certain the corners are aligned, the joints are tight and the surface is flush with the adjacent tiles.
