'I think they (the regime) used the thugs to deliver a message tothe Syrian people that "either you are with us or against us",' AbuGhazi al-Hamwi - not his real name - said via Skype. 'People who do not take sides are a target, because the regime isrunning out of options on how to stop the revolt. The regime triesto prove this is a war, not an uprising. And this is how they doit.' He said Al-Kubeir was a Sunni enclave near Asileh and other Alawitevillages.
'The violence is worst in areas where Sunni and Alawite live neareach other. The regime is trying to break society in half,' hesaid. Hamwi said he spoke to a survivor of the massacre, who pretended tobe dead after being hit on the head with a stick. 'He played dead in order to survive. He could barely speak.
He wasin a very bad shape. You can imagine, he'd just lost 35 members ofhis family,' Hamwi said. He also blamed UN observers for not heading to the site of themassacre quickly. 'When the army deployed there, and the shelling of around 20-25houses started, activists called the UN monitors, who said theycould not go because it was late in the day. For me that means theyare just not professional,' Hamwi said.
Another Hama-based activist, Mousab al-Hamadi said: 'The regimewants to create a sectarian clash in the country. The regime wantsto burn down the whole country.' Russia has hinted that it might take President Assad without theprospect of prosecution if he was to flea Syria. A senior diplomat said that if it was what the people of Syriawanted, then such a thing to happen. The diplomat tried to deflect pressure on Moscow to help engineerAssad's exit from power, however, saying his fate is 'not aquestion for us' but is up to Syrians themselves - repeating aposition Moscow has long voiced.
'Application of the so-called Yemen scenario to resolve theconflict in Syria is possible only if the Syrians themselves agreeto it,' Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said, according tothe Interfax news agency. 'The Yemen scenario was discussed by the Yemenis themselves. Ifthis scenario is discussed by Syrians themselves and is adopted bythem, we are not against it.' Hamadi said Syrians had lost faith in the international community. 'Everyone here is depending on the FSA (Free Syrian Army). Theinternational community has failed' us, he said, referring to rebelforces.
Hamadi said there was no FSA presence in Al-Kubeir which he saidhad not been reported to have taken sides in the uprising. 'For 40 years we have lived under oppression. We know moremassacres like this may happen. We are ready to go to the end, evenif it means half of the Syrian people might get killed,' Hamadisaid. Prime Minister David Cameron today condemned the 'brutal andsickening' killing of civilians in Syria and called for 'concertedaction' by the international community against the regime ofPresident Bashar Assad.
