FORT WORTH — The Texas Department of Transportation announcedWednesday afternoon that a section of Highway 114 and FM 156 isclosed until further notice. Temporary repairs could be made in the next 24 to 36 hours. A steel beam tower that was being hauled on an 18-wheeler hit anoverhead railroad trestle Wednesday morning along a two-lanestretch of Highway 114 near Championship Parkway in far north FortWorth. This is race week at Texas Motor Speedway; events are scheduledThursday through Saturday. The biggest crowds and worst traffic are expected Saturday at theIndy Car race. Jesus Armenta says closing Highway 114 and FM 156 onrace day would create an even worse traffic nightmare. "It's such a narrow path. It's time-consuming. If you justblock it, it's going to be harder," said Armenta, who works ata convenience store near the Speedway. Speedway officials are optimistic the damage won't interfere withSaturday's race. The incident happened as the driver of a truck heading westbound onHighway 114 at about 4:30 a.m. underestimated the height of theload, which struck the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroadbridge. A driver behind the 18-wheeler slammed her vehicle into the rear ofthe truck. No one was injured. Engineers discovered the railroad track and bed were displaced fromtheir support columns. TxDOT estimated fixing that problem —along with other needed repairs — may take untilmid-afternoon Friday. As engineers examined the bridge damage, they also discoveredprevious damage to the parallel FM 156 bridge over Highway 114. Ascrews make repairs, FM 156 will remain closed until Thursday night. Police rerouted traffic through Speedway property on Fridayevening. "Coming home, we had to go through the motor speedway, all theway around to 156, and do a U-turn at 114, and then through themotor speedway just to get into our neighborhood," said KarenBrooks, a frustrated homeowner in far north Fort Worth. Fort Worth police are working on a traffic plan for the races. Theytold News 8 while they hope to open both roads by Saturday, morework will be needed to repair the bridge, and that could takeweeks. "It's already bad with all the traffic coming through here, without that being shut down," said Joseph Krebs, a Fort Worthmotorist. Texas Motor Speedway officials urged race fans to check theirwebsite for alternate race routes once Fort Worth police finalize atraffic plan. Fort Worth police say if all goes as planned, the temporary workwill be done before the Indy Car race on Saturday. But TxDOT plansto close the roads again after the races for permanent repairs, andthat could last several weeks. E-mail sstoler@wfaa.com.
