efforts toward recovery. The film relies on the captivating,emotional and even poetic interviews of its subjects rather thannarrators recounting the facts or images reliving the horrors ofthe day. "Rebirth" is by Jim Whitaker, producer of films like "8 Mile" and"Changeling." The film owes much to cameras that track, throughtime-lapse photography, the evolution of the space where the TwinTowers once rose over Lower Manhattan. "I just started essentially with the site, and I felt like I neededto approach it from kind of a 360-degree angle and imagine who wasaffected," says Whitaker, 43, who was in Detroit working on "8Mile" when the attacks happened. "So I had in my head an idea thatI would find a firefighter, find somebody who was on the impactfloor and people who would have been affected by the day." Reaching out to firefighters, he met Tim Brown, who along with hismentor, Capt. Terry Hatton of the elite Rescue 1, were called tothe scene of the World Trade Center on 9-11. After warmly greeting each other, the two went into separatebuildings. Soon after, Brown saw World Trade Center One collapse,knowing his friend was inside, leaving him to deal with hissurvivor's guilt. Whitaker began his interviews in 2002 with 10 subjects. Thefilmmaker was sure, at first, what he was looking for. "It wasn't very scientific ... . What I was asking was a realemotional commitment for a long period of time," says Whitaker. Hemet Tepper at a memorial soccer game for Villanueva, explainingthat the film was about "the grieving process, the healing process,and the hopeful process of getting beyond where both the subjectswere and also where the site was." Tepper agreed to do it. Over the years some participants dropped out, and Whitaker decidedto focus on five for the film. (Eight are included in a companionbook to the film.) Besides Tepper and Brown, "Rebirth's" subjectsare Nicholas Chirls, a high-school student who lost his mother, anoffice worker, and subsequently his connection with his father; theoften-funny Ling Young, who has had some 40 surgeries after beingterribly scarred on 9-11; and Brian Lyons, a construction workerwho lost his youngest brother, also a city firefighter. Brown says that despite the pain, he never thought about stoppingwith the project. "From the beginning, I believed in Jim's vision, and the furtherdown the road, the closer that we got with Jim, the more powerfulit became for me," says Brown, 49. The retired firefighter, who nowruns his own business, sees the film as a historic document to helpfuture generations deal with grief, pointing out Hatton's daughteris now 9 and.
