Granite is one of the most popular home finishing materials on the market. Its diverse color options make it an ideal choice for just about any decor. Granite is extremely durable and resists staining, cracking and other damage. Its dense properties make it somewhat difficult to work with, though, and cutting it into counter tiles requires special tools. Miter Saw A miter saw is designed to make accurate crosscuts in wood, tile and granite. The power versions are commonly used today, and they make work quick and efficient. Most suppliers or manufacturers make small and medium-size models and offer a selection of blade sizes. Blades, which are usually tungsten or steel carbide, generally range from 8 to 12 inches. They can be as large as 19 inches, though. The spinning blade goes through the surface at a 90-degree angle, but the miter index allows this angle to be changed. Circular Saw A circular saws is a hand-held or mounted machine that uses a flat, circular blade to make cuts. The type, material and size of the blade vary greatly, making it a somewhat versatile tool. Steel blades are generally inexpensive and work best when you're dealing with softer materials, such as wood. The blades dull quickly when they're used on harder materials. For granite work, a diamond or masonry blade is required. Because this saw cannot be adjusted to different angles, it may not produce a cut that's as clean as a line cut by a mitre saw. These blades have diamond-tipped teeth that will not dull when they go through hard materials. Notched Trowel A notched trowel is often invaluable when you're working with granite. A notched trowel has a V-shaped notch on one side and a square notch on the other. The tool is used to spread adhesive or thinset before you lay granite. The square notch spreads the adhesive horizontally, while the V spreads it vertically. Notch depths vary, so look for one that is two-thirds the thickness of your tile. Materials Each project is different and may require different tools and materials. Generally, however, all granite projects have some basic requirements. Thinset mortar is a must, because it holds the tiles in place. Generally, a 50 pound bag will cover approximately 75 square feet and must be applied with a trowel. Additionally, grout, granite sealer and caulk are required, along with a selection of backsplash trim, roofing nails and drywall screws.
