Importance of Temporary Shelters

Business
Large construction projects such as erecting skyscrapers and building bridges are usually on tight schedule. Work is usually done round the clock in three eight-hour shifts. Some workers may need to work longer shifts. In large projects, it is common to hire hundreds of stay-in workers. Some workers are too far from their residences, making daily commutes impractically tiring and expensive.

Onsite shelters

Hence, temporary dormitory shelters are needed to be constructed onsite. On the other hand, there are some components of a project that need to be assembled onsite. Some of these components are too precise that an onsite workshop is necessary, complete with all the essential and specialized tools.

The onsite workshops must be fabricated from materials that are easy to assemble and disassemble. Constructing these temporary shelters must involve the least amount of effort possible and should be finished within short period of time. Light materials such as plywood, corrugated GI sheets, and timber or steel frames are commonly used for constructing temporary shelters.

Prefabricated structures

There are prefabricated and modular structures such as Quonset huts are also used depending on the needs. Prefabricated and modular structures are very easy to assemble. They can also be re-used and re-purposed several times. However, they are a bit expensive compared to improvised temporary shelters that are constructed from the excess materials that can be found onsite.

A temporary workshop shelter is primarily intended to protect against rain, sun's heat, strong winds and other weather elements. Without this shelter, the tools and equipment will be vulnerable to damage. Workers will also not be able to accomplish their tasks effectively.

Internal climate

Onsite workshops may also need to have internal climate control, especially if they house sensitive electronic devices such as computers. Designing building components such as decorative trims usually require computer-based drafting. Simulated models may also need to first be digitally tested before the actual structures can be assembled. The workshop shelter can also serve as the office or control center for the implementation of a construction project onsite.

A temporary workshop shelter should also be elevated from the ground to prevent moisture from saturating the interior. A platform must first be constructed before the walls and roof can be integrated. The elevated platform frame will provide the support for the flooring, preventing the soil and possible mud puddles from touching the floor and dirtying the feet of the workshop workers.

Constructing frames

The wall and roof frames of a temporary workshop, dormitory shelter or office can easily be assembled by bolting to riveting together metal tubes, bars or angle bars. Welding components together are generally avoided to make it easier to disassemble the shelter when the project is done. Light materials such as tarpaulins can be used to cover the frames. A temporary shelter can have tarpaulins as roofs and walls, thereby creating a tent.

Thin but corrugated galvanized metal sheets can also be used as wall and roof structures. These are more durable than tarpaulins but they are much heavier. They are ideal for constructing temporary onsite warehouses for supplies.
