Is caravan insurance compulsory is a common question, as it seems like a bit of a grey area to people. The quick answer to this question is that it is not. So why bother then, isn't life expensive enough? That is of course one point of view, especially as there are other insurance types that we can't avoid, such as car insurance. On top of that plenty of people not keen on insurance companies. For some people they come not too far behind the banks and politicians. But even if you do feel like that it is best not to cut off your nose in spite of your face. Personally I know a family who got horribly caught out, leaving them in thousands of pounds in debt. What's more is it will be a long time before they can have a caravan touring holiday. Let's look at some hard facts, that may surprise you. However in the UK alone there are about half a million touring caravans on the road, of which we estimate that as much as 20% of these are not covered. What will happen if they are in an accident or have damage to their tourers? Will that be a good situation? Obviously not. So althought caravan insurance is not compulsory, there are plenty of good reasons to pay for it. Even considering the issue of public liability - many insurers offer a £2 million minimum for public liability. This covers the situations where a third party or their property sustains injuries which can be attributed to your ownership of your caravan. The types of situations we have personally seen include touring caravans which became detached and collided with other caravans. This caused serious physical damage to the other party. Claims such as these run into big figures, we are talking about even 10's of thousands of pounds, or whatever currency you use. From a legal perspective it is the car insurer who covers you legally whilst on the road. However consider this fact: The cost of an average claim is over 19% more than the cost of the premium. Now as the average cost of a static caravan comes in at around £12,500 and a tourer is around £9000, do you really want to take that risk? Even if you feel you won't be that unlucky person to have an accident, how about the changing, harsher weather conditions? No doubt you have heard about damage through extreme weather on caravan sites. So will you consider caravan insurance or will you still take the risk?
