The online community in the USA has demonstrated large scale protests against the controversial SOPA, the bill that proposes some measures that can legally violate the privacy of online surfers. The main objective of SOPA is to protect intellectual properties from unauthorized use; but the bill also contains some recommendations or proposals that would result in clear violation of privacy of internet users. This kind of websites and file sharing networks are extensively used by the pirates to distribute the illegal copies of software, books, music etc. By analyzing the data transmitted by these sites and peer to peer networks the actors behind the unauthorized content sharing can be detected. Deep packet inspection, proposed by SOPA bill, involves deep level of scrutinizing of every data packets, passing over the internet, by the law enforcers. The law enforcers would be allowed, under this bill, to perform inspection on any packet they think suspicious. As a result, an innocent web surfer can fall victim to such kind of inspection revealing personal data before the law enforcers.
