An electrical switch is a device which acts by breaking an electrical circuit and thereby diverts from one conductor to another. Electromechanical device is the commonest form of switch which is manually operated. It has electrical contacts connecting the external circuits. It can be in a ‘closed’ state that means electricity is flowing between the contacts and ‘open’ state that means that electricity is not flowing between the contacts. A snag in the switch might result in the device becoming dysfunctional. This might give rise to questions that are asked to electrical experts online. This article provides answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about such problems : My ceiling fan fixture gave out a spark when the electrical switch was turned on in my mobile home. This fan fixture, the fan and light in the bathroom, the light in the hall, and one additional room do not have power supply. How can this problem be fixed? Case details: The wiring has been checked where the problem originated. Two black wires along with one white and a ground are connected to the switch. The wires have been removed and a reading of 98v has been recorded on one of the black wires. A re-checking thereafter revealed a reading of 98v from hot to neutral. Hot to ground and neutral to ground read 0 v. There is a probability of two problems. Firstly it appears the switch does not have a grounding system. Secondly there could be a neutral connection issue. The origin of both the problems might be the same. To fix this, first of all you need to shut down the breaker that feeds power to the circuit. Then a tape or some other marker should be used to identify everything on that circuit, including switches, lights, and outlets. Thereafter measure the voltage of the circuit-breaker of your panel. If the breaker is okay then all the switches and outlets identified earlier need to be checked for any loose or corroded connection. If there is none you have to re-do physically every connection on each device. A re-doing of the connection sometimes fixes such problems. How can a two-way electrical light switch be stopped from blinking? The problem could be because of a bad switch. It seems it is actually a three-way switch. Such switches sometimes break at the frame and become dysfunctional. These are light switches that can be operated at two different places. Both switches can be replaced to solve the problem. While doing this, it should be noted where the wires end. Remember the wire on the black screw is common and should be replaced on the new switch’s common screw. A light and an exhaust fan are controlled by a combination switch in my bathroom. The top and the bottom switches control the light and the fan respectively. Due to the replacement of the top switch which had suffered a short circuit, both switches now turn on the fan and light at the same time. The wiring consists of a black and white pair of wires each coming from two separate cables. There is another bare wire from a cable which is not connected. How can this issue be solved? It is possible that the tab between the black screws has not been broken. Once this is broken the screws will be separated and the two switches should be able to operate independently on separate feeds. An electrical switch controlling an electrical outlet has a grounding wire for both the switch and the outlet connecting to a ground wire in the line. When the switch is turned on a tester shows it is ok. However, in the off position it shows an open ground. Why is it happening? It appears that the neutral wire is switched but the hot wire is not. Your tester might also have problems. Hence, it has to be looked into as well. When a building's wiring is done, light switches are placed in convenient locations. There are various types of switches. Multiple pole switches can be used to control a lamp with a multi-way switching process from various locations. Wireless light switches can be used to install remote controlled lights. For the purpose of maintenance or repair work you should ask an electrician if you can’t identify the problem yourself.
