Food and Culture in Barcelona: A Guide to the Catalan Capital

Travel & Tourism
Are you planning on heading to Spain for some fun in the sun? If you have chosen Lloret de Mar, Barcelona is likely to be the nearest major airport, and from here you can easily arrange your transfer to the resort. But don’t be in such a rush! Barcelona is a spectacular city and one of the most beautiful in Europe. Here is a guide to the gastronomic delights and the unique cultural attractions that you will be able to enjoy during a stay here.

The Fabulous Food

When you travel to Lloret de Mar, Barcelona is often the place where you will enter Spain, and if you have a few days to spare there are plenty of restaurants to discover and delicious cuisine to sample. Catalan cuisine is typically comprised of fresh fish and vegetables, olive oil, meat, cheese and excellent wine. It is a very healthy diet and some of the best food in the capital.

What meals should you insist on trying? Well, there is escudilla, which is a stew made of sausages, beans and potatoes. Then there is escalivada, which is a popular grilled vegetable dish. Bacalao, a special salted cod, is also popular and is found in numerous meals and salads. And just where should you go to eat well in this buzzing city? There are literally hundreds of excellent restaurants of course, but if you want to eat somewhere traditional try Set Portes, which has been a popular with locals since 1836.

Cultural Attractions

Before you move on to Lloret de Mar, Barcelona is absolutely full of amazing cultural attractions you should take the time to see. In fact, it is renowned as one of the most cultural cities in Europe!

Art lovers should head directly to the Picasso Museum, which has one of the best collections in the world of the famous artist’s work. Architecture fans will also be in their element; this is an architecturally outstanding city, mainly due to the works of Gaudi dotted around the city. He designed many buildings, all of which are very different from anything you will see anywhere else. His masterpiece is, of course, the Sagrada Família - the cathedral that incredibly still remains unfinished after he started work on it in 1882. Then there is Parc Güell, another incredible attraction from the talents of Gaudi. It is free to look around as it is now a public park, and it contains some wonderful sculptures and benches, as well as spectacular views.

Don’t Miss Out

This is a truly spectacular city, so don’t miss out exploring it a little before you head to the sun in Lloret de Mar. Barcelona is the nearest major airport to the resort, so there is a good chance that you will arrive here to catch your transfer. If so, don’t pass up the opportunity to enjoy a few meals out and see the top cultural sights.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct. If you’re looking for a transfer to Lloret de Mar, Barcelona will be your pick up point. Shuttle Direct provide pre-booked shuttles to major destinations all over Europe. Wherever you travel, Shuttle Direct can make sure that you don’t miss your car on your holiday abroad.
