He Was Born In New York Lenny Bruce was born in New York, which is precisely where his post humous pardon was obtained about 37 years after he died. His Performances Revolved Around Black Humor and Contained Obscenities One of the reasons why the police hounded Lenny Bruce on a regular basis was because many of his performances centered on the politics of the day, and he wasn’t afraid to bring up topics that others were uncomfortable talking or even hearing about. The police began to hound him due to his use of obscenities while on stage, and this is what would eventually lead to his conviction in 1964. 3. He Was a Jazz Comedian Any informative Lenny Bruce documentary will show that this performer was a jazz comedian; instead of writing out a script that he would read off of on stage, he simply had guided topics that he would then improvise upon. He Married in 1951 Lenny Bruce married a stripper named Honey Harlow in 1951, although he wanted her to quit stripping. The pair searched for work; Honey found a spot within the Colony Club, one of the best burlesque clubs in the city, while Lenny went on to perform in Strip City. In 1955, the couple had a daughter named Kitty Bruce, and in 1959, Honey and Lenny’s divorce was finalized. While Lenny’s personal and professional life might have been rocky, he made a name for himself within this field that continues to inspire professionals to this day, and this is one of the many reasons why documentaries continue to be made about his life and his impact within the genre of comedy.
