An apron sink is also known as a farmhouse sink. The style of an apron sink is different from modern sinks in that the apron sink is a four-sided sink that sits on top of the sink base. Because the front of the sink base shows, some apron sink designs have stylish décor such as tile. Other sinks, such as porcelain sinks, simply show the face of the sink. An apron sink is installed on standard kitchen sink bases, which are typically cabinets. To install an apron sink, however, some modifications need to be made to the sink base cabinet. Instructions as follows: Firstly, measure the front panel of the apron sink. Use your tape measure to measure the width of the front panel of the apron sink, so you are measuring from left to right. Write down the width. If you do not have a measuring tape, you can also trace the size of the apron sink onto a piece of flat cardboard. You can do this by placing the front of the kitchen sink face down on the cardboard. Use a pencil to trace the front of the sink onto the cardboard. Secondly, measure the sink base. Use the measuring tape to measure the width of the sink base. You should measure the front panel of the cabinet where you will be mounting the apron sink to the sink base. You can also put the tracing of the front of the apron sink up to the sink base. You want to determine if the sink base is the same width, narrower or wider than the apron sink. Thirdly, identify the mount style. You can install the apron sink so that it is flush with the kitchen cabinet, which means the top of the sink is in line with the cabinet. Another mounting option is undermount, so that the sink sits slightly below the sink base top. The final option is raised, which means the sink sits slightly above the top of the sink base. Choosing the type of mount determines the height at which you should install the apron sink. Fourthly, measure the height of the sink base according to the type of mount you want to use to install the sink. Fifthly, install the ½ inch thick plank of plywood into the base of the sink. The plywood is the support for the apron sink, so you can rest the sink on it while you determine the cuts that need to be made to the sink base. Place the plywood so that when you set the sink on it, the sink will sit at the height that you want --- flush, undermount or slightly over. When you place the plywood, measure from the plywood to the height of the sink to make sure that it matches the measurement you have from Step 4. Sixthly, mark the front panel on the sink base if the apron sink is narrower than the panel. If the apron sink is not as wide as the sink, then you will need to make a cut along the right and left side of the front, top panel of the sink base, where the apron sink sits. If your sink is the same width as the base, then you will not need to make this cut. Use the pencil to mark where the cuts need to be made. Remove the sink from the base. Seventhly, use the saw to cut along the two marks you made on the top front panel of the sink base.
