The examination of Sanborn maps between 1886 and 1923 continues forthe remaining maps of 1907, 1912 and 1923, describing the streetsand buildings near the junction of Main and Elm Streets inWestfield. In 1907, lot 547 is Elm, lot 548 is W.U. Telegraph and DG, lot 549is a jeweler, lot 550 is a barber, and lot 551 has a new, partiallystone structure building that still stands at address 44, but in1907 is a meat market. In 1912, lot 547 is Elm, lot 548, or addresses 36 and 38, is W.E.Telegraph and DG, lot 549, or address 40, is a jeweler, lot 550, oraddress 42, is a barber and lot 551, or address 44 is a restaurant. A short sentence was found in the Westfield Republican of Nov. 30,1921, stating that the Macomber house was removed from the cornerof Main and Elm in 1921, so that the entrance from Main onto Elmcould be increased to the full width of the rest of Elm Street. Atthat time also, Main Street was being renewed. On the 1923 Sanborn map, the Macomber house has been moved up ElmStreet to what is now address 33 Elm, although there seems to besome inconsistency in the numbering of the structures on the eastside of Elm Street between Main and McClurg for a few years afterthis house had been moved. It appears as though the building thathoused the millinery and later the jeweler at address 40 may havebeen razed or possibly moved up Elm to become the small buildingbehind the moved Macomber house. In 1923, Elm Street, where it intersects Main Street, had beenwidened to include lots 547 and 548, and there is a vacant lot atlot 549 or address 40 Main Street. There is a store at lot 550 or42 Main Street, probably still the barber, but the historian officecopy of the 1923 Sanborn map is blurred where the label is writtenfor 44 Main Street. In the next BeeLines, using a title search, the owners of the plotof land where Elm and Main Diner are now located in 2011 will beidentified. As mentioned in the first BeeLines about maps from the1800s that illustrate this property, this research was done toanswer several history mystery questions about not only the historyof diners in Westfield, but also some of the early business men andwomen, and buildings, now long gone.
