DALLAS, TX - On the latest podcast generated by the motivational site Performance in the Sweet Spot, Rujon Morrison, Program Director of Shelterwood Therapeutic Boarding School in Independence, Missouri encourages parents to allow their children to fail. “A sense-of-self is established when a child is allowed to be who they are. And greater yet, be accepted by their parents while they fail in the process of finding out exactly who that is.” Morrison asserts. “That’s how children learn that their choices, both successful and unsuccessful, have consequences for their lives and by extension the lives of those they love.” In this educational and dynamic forty-five minute podcast on the popular new site topics include: the loss of a sense-of-self through lack of attachment or “the cultural attachment issue,” codependency and the empty nest, acceptance and boundaries, performance pressures and the warning signs that kids are in trouble. The website’s founder Chuck Quarles interviews Morrison who is impacting teens at Shelterwood - a licensed boarding school that provides individual, group, and family counseling for at-risk youth using what they refer to as college-age big brother and big sister ongoing support coupled with highly-professional care by on-site therapists. “The core issues facing kids today are the same but the world’s pressures are so different. These pressures create a plethora of new ways to cope that we didn’t know about at their age.” Morrison suggests that the way that families have changed historically has caused a “cultural attachment issue.” Simply put, because of the busy way society now lives, children don’t grow up with the day to day practicalities of living together within a family in a way that allows them to learn how to relate well with others. This issue calls into question the core need every human has - the need to belong. Without belonging in a way that’s meaningful a huge disconnect occurs. Children are then unable to connect with others as well to themselves. And without that connection boundaries and self-esteem are hindered.
