It is very common to see used cars in Zimbabwe, especially since the economy is making it more and more difficult to buy new cars on a limited budget. There is a local automotive industry in the country but it seems that only the wealthy can afford to purchase the new autos. What about those who need vehicles as well but are not as privileged? Pre-owned cars imported from other countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore, and of course Japan, have populated the streets of Zimbabwe and have met a lot of the people’s transportation needs. The Zimbabwe government as earlier put a ban on importing secondhand vehicles, particularly those that are more than five years old. Needless to say, many Zimbabweans were outraged and protested this ban, stating economic reasons. Many people think the local industry still has a long way to go, and so they turn to the tried-and-tested, affordable, and fuel-efficient pre-owned cars from Japan and other countries. The government suspended the ban, saying it will wait until the local industry is able to support the demands of the population in terms of automotive products. With the ban suspended, buying used cars in Zimbabwe from online sellers has become easy, provided that you follow the set regulations. One of the regulations set is that all vehicles on Zimbabwe’s roads should be right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles only. The government targets that by December 31, 2015, the traffic system will be more organized by banning all left-hand drive (LHD) cars. With this is mind, buyers of pre-owned cars are advised to choose RHD vehicles when selecting autos for import (importation of LHD vehicles is restricted). For those who already own LHD cars or are currently waiting for an LHD car just being shipped to the country, their vehicles are still permitted in the country, until such time that they break down or can no longer be used. At first the government wanted the LHD cars to be converted into RHD, but soon retracted the order. Online marketplaces of pre-owned cars would already give you options on RHD and LHD vehicles. Be sure to specify you are looking for RHD cars so the stock list will show only those with RHD. This will make looking for used cars in Zimbabwe easier. Tradecarview, Japan’s largest online marketplace of pre-owned cars, recommends several high-quality vehicle models that would be ideal for use in Zimbabwe. Most of the models are by Toyota: the Succeed and RegiusAce Vans, Hilux Surf, Camry, Belta, Celsior, and Corolla Spacio. The Lexus IS, Nissan Fairlady Z, Nissan Terrano, and Mazda MPV would also suit Zimbabwe’s roads very well. Pre-owned trucks and buses may also be imported for construction/industrial projects and mass transportation needs. Shipping is easier now, with the Beitbridge border accepting goods going into Zimbabwe from South Africa. Before, imports need to be collected from South Africa and forwarded into Zimbabwe. The vehicle exporters’ local agents will handle the logistics and clearing of the used cars in Zimbabwe, taking the hassle of the clearing process off the buyers, making it more convenient. All buyers would need to do is to pay the necessary taxes and drive their (new) used cars home!
