Motivation and inspiration- two terms that determine your destiny. You hear many people speak about how motivated they are. Some tell you they need some inspiration. That they went to listen to public speakers, they read a book, or attended some religious session searching for some inspiration. These two terms determine your success of failure in life. People say that successful people are motivated. The great artists, great men of old, or those who break all societal limitations become an inspiration to us all. Is motivation what lies in between all these great feats? Is it inspiration that makes things happen? A discussion of motivation and inspiration is not complete without a mention of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Psychologist Maslow wrote a paper in 1934 titled 'A Theory of Human Motivation'. In this paper, he gave his opinion on what he thought motivates human behaviour. The lowest motivation for human conduct is a desire to acquire some creature comforts. You are at this level if you are struggling to get by. Those at the highest levels of human motivation seek to self-actualize. They live for higher things, believed in higher ideals, and move for higher reasons motivated by the highest human thoughts. Inspiration on the other hand is what is inside you. While motivation is usually dependent on achieving something on the outside of self, inspiration is something inside you. It is similar to what most people call 'a light bulb moment'. Something just goes off inside you and you feel moved to achieve some great things. It is the feeling you get after enjoying a great sunset. It is what you will feel when a random stranger does a kind act. You will be inspired if you see Michael Angelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. We are all motivated to achieve things. We are all pushed to achieve what is outside us. The survival instinct inside us makes us want food. We want to have safe neighborhoods where we can hopefully raise our children. We want the respect of others. We want money. That is why most of us work. Higher ideals do not motivate most of us. That is why when people start discussing issues such as global warming, very few people care. Many people care when you talk about jobs and money. Because that is what immediately motivates us. But the best among us are inspired. They inspire us because they are an inspiration. Immediate physical needs do not motivate them. They have a desire to leave a footprint in the world. They are at the level of self-actualization. They want to make this world a better place. So what lies in between? It depends where you stand. For the masses, they are simply motivated to achieve the basic animal desires. They exist, they are alive, but they are not living. For the great few among us, they continued to inspire us because they are inspired. They live to the fullest. We should live like them. The world would be a better place if we did.
