If the harsh weather conditions this winter have wrought damaged your chimney or any part of your home, you should be searching for a good mason contractor in Passaic County. Stonemasons have a long and rich history as one of the world’s oldest trades. Many of the world’s most famous structures were made by stonemasons once people learned how to use fire to create quicklime, plasters and mortars. Many ancient civilizations built some of the world’s greatest landmarks with stonemasons. Back when the Egyptians built the pyramids, there were no mason contractors in Passaic County, yet early stonemasons completed building the pyramids under some pretty unfavorable conditions. Many other famous ancient structures and temples were built in Greece, Rome and Persia by stonemasons. Stonemasonry became so popular in Eastern Europe in the ninth century that there were thousands of stone churches and temples built within 300 years. This rampant popularity of stone structures is what allowed the trade to thrive throughout the centuries. By medieval times, stonemasons were so high in demand that they had to be split up into three separate guilds. There was a hierarchy to the three masonry titles. At the bottom were the apprentices. Mason training was a very valued skill. The cost of apprenticeship was to be indentured to their masters. They did not get paid. The next step is to become a journeyman. They were also called jack and knave. This is where the term, “Jack of all trades, master of none” originated from. They could journey throughout the land and charge daily prices for their skills, but could not hire an apprentice. They would go where they were needed to assist their master. Master masons are the highest level of masons. A journeyman could only become a master by submitting a master work to the guild for evaluation. Once being approved as a master craftsman, one could hire journeyman and take on an apprentice. Much of these practices are still used today, although people are obviously paid for their work. Stone masons have passed their trade down through the centuries all the way from ancient Egypt to today’s mason contractors in Passaic County.
