The world of child seat restraint design, manufacturing and Child Car Seat approval are undergoing some major changes. Rear facing car seats for toddlers up to 3 years, having been made more acceptable under the new I-size regulations are set to become more prominent on the market. There’s just one problem, there are currently no models that meet the new I-Size regulations available for sale, which will only start to enter the market . JMDA Design, based in the UK and Shanghai, China, have designed an R44 rear-facing group 1 car seat for toddlers up to three years of age, which is currently completing certification testing as part of the stringent Car Seat approval process. This new design will lead the transition to I Size. The new I-Size regulations may cause difficulties for manufacturers and retailers of older rear facing car seats as the I-size regulations raise the minimum weight forward facing to 15Kgcurrent R44 group 1 forward facing car seats start at 9kg This suggests that there is a reducing demand for R44 Group 1 seats as I Size take a foothold in the market. There’s still opportunity to develop appropriate R44 child restraint design before I-size regulations replace the existing R44 Car seat approval process, with manyindustry insiders suggesting the changes will take place over the next five or more years JMDA with its years of child restraint expertise and world-wide reputation for child car seat design innovation, has once again taken the lead in the market for child safety and restraint design with the newrear and forward facing model. This innovativedesign has received interest from the German market with German company Hauck set to be the first to take advantage of the regulatory shake up in Europe’s child restraints. As time marches on towards the I-size switch over, more and more retailers will be looking for a reliable supplier of new rear and forward facing car seats, as most if not all of the models currently for sale on the European market will see a decline in sales as media and consumer groups raise awareness of I-Size regulations. Understanding what it takes to achieve I-Size car seat approval could not be more important to manufacturers and retailers. Once again JMDA is pioneering new designs that will keep our children safe on busy roads and ensure that retailers and manufacturers of child restraint seats will be fully compliant with current and future safety guidelines and regulations.
