Mold Removal For Your Lower Level

Family & Parenting
The lower level is an area of your home that is most susceptible to mold and mildew growth. Mold thrives in humid and/or damp areas and it is often far too late before it is noticed. Exposure to toxins such as mold over a prolonged period of time can be hazardous. For this reason, it is essential to know various ways to rid your lower level of these toxins, so your home or other places you frequent are protected. Before beginning a process such as basement waterproofing, be sure to eliminate the mold first.

1. The first thing to do is clean your basement and things in it where molds thrive. These are rugs, old furniture, boxes, old clothes, and anything made from wood. Throw away what you don't need. You can also donate some of your stuff provided you clean and rid them of molds first. Once you've sorted your stuff, take the ones with molds and clean them outside.

2. As for the basement, mold removal requires some detailed inspection of the whole place. Look for leaking pipes and cracks on walls where rain water may pass through. You can also get a professional to make a mold remediation plan. If you're capable, fix these damages yourself. If not, you can hire experts to do the job. You may also want to do some foundation repair and replace your basement's insulation or install one if you don't have it.

3. Once all the leaks and cracks are fixed, it's time for some serious scrubbing. Mix some soap with hot water and use them for cleaning the whole basement. You can also use any anti-fungal cleaning agent. You can find one in the cleaning aisle of your neighborhood supermarket. You can also ask professional cleaners if they sell these products. Take your time cleaning the affected areas.

4. After you are done with the cleaning, use clean towels or any absorbent material to dry the place. If you have a dehumidifier, then by all means use it.

5. It is also a good idea to repaint your basement. You should do so only if the place is completely dry. Repainting will not only make your basement look new, it will protect the place, especially the wooden parts, from future damage. You also need to do some basement waterproofing.

Now that the basement is ready, do some mold removal on the stuff you plan to put back in it. Make sure they are clean of molds before you refurnish your basement.

Make it a habit to check and clean your basement regularly. Have a watchful eye for mold growths, leaks and cracks. Also, take some time to clean the place up at least once a month. If you have a dehumidifier, use it as often as needed.

Mold removal takes a little bit of dedication. If you're not up to it, you can call an expert to do the delicate parts like foundation repair, mold remediation and basement waterproofing, among others. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, everything is worth it as you and your family's health is at stake if you let the molds thrive in your home.
