The spokesman of UNobservers in Syria said Monday that the mission is continuing itsduties to achieve the cease-fire truce brokered by UN-Arab Leaguejoint special envoy Kofi Annan, adding that more observers wouldarrive soon in Syria to join the 70-member team already on ground. In a statement made to reporters in DamascusMonday, Singh said the observers in Syria have been stationing in anumber of Syrian provinces, with four observers in each of Homs,Hama, Daraa and Idlib as well as three other groups working in thecapital Damascus and its outskirts. The Damascus-based team visited Monday a number ofdistricts and suburbs, such as Douma, Harasta along with otherrestive suburbs. In central Hama province, another team of observersvisited polling stations there as Syrians across the country beganto cast their ballots on Monday to elect their representatives inthe 250- seat parliament, the first in light of the newconstitution in the country.
Earlier in the day, Syrian Foreign Minister Walidal-Moallem stressed the importance of the "objectiveness andprofessionalism" in the performance of UN observers' mission inSyria, the state- run SANA news agency reported. Moallem made the remarks during a meeting with thehead of UN observers Robert Mood, during which he welcomed the jobof the mission that monitors the cessation of violence in thecountry. The minister stressed that Syria would continuefacilitating the work of the UN mission. He underscored the need that the mission would"convey the Syrian reality to the international community away fromthe currently-underway politicization at the UN Security Council." For his part, Mood submitted to Moallem apresentation of the mission's work and the "progress it has made,"according to SANA. It said Mood has "lauded the Syrian cooperation infacilitating the mission's job and ensuring the freedom of itsmovement without impediments." The observers have been dispatched to hotspotsacross Syria, including provinces of Hama, Homs, Idlib and Daraa,since two weeks ago, to monitor the UN-backed ceasefire that wentinto effect on April 12.
Despite their presence, violence has notabated effectively, and daily killings, kidnappings and bombingsare still reported in the country. The ceasefire is part of the six-point plan putforward by Annan. The plan calls mainly for halting violence fromall sides to pave the way for a political settlement to the13-month-old unrest in Syria.
