Tips to do a Slate Shower

Business
Slate is one of the most durable natural stones you can choose for home projects. Whether you use it for an exterior application such as a porch deck or an interior installation such as a bathroom shower, you are guaranteed to have a lifelong investment. Slate tile installs exactly the same as normal man-made tiles such as ceramic or porcelain, although some special considerations have to be made because stone is heavier and harder to work with. Instructions as follows: Firstly, prepare the shower for the slate block installation. Paint waterproofing material into the corners and out at least 4 inches on all sides with the paintbrush, and then use a paint roller to coat the rest of the shower walls. Use masking tape on the outside perimeters to avoid spreading the waterproofing compound on the walls surrounding the shower. Secondly, lay out the slate shower. Dry-lay several tiles on the floor with spacers between them. Two-foot grids are easiest to work with. Mark those measurements on the wall, and draw level and plumb lines to guide your installation. Thirdly, install the slate tile. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Stack the tile off of the shower pan. Mix thinset according to the manufacturer's instructions, or use a premixed thinset. Spread thinset onto the stone wall within your predefined pencil grids using a notched trowel. Wipe the dust off the back of a piece of tile with a towel. Press the slate tile into the thinset, and apply pressure. Move the tile slightly in all directions to ensure the bond. Repeat this process for each individual piece. Fourthly, work your way up the wall, stacking each row of tile on top of the row underneath it. Use tile spacers to define the vertical and horizontal joints. Mark necessary cuts around fixtures or into corners with a pencil, and make those cuts with the marble tiles wet saw. Dry each piece of tile off completely before installing it into the thinset. Allow a minimum of 24 hours before you grout the installation. Fifthly, mix the grout according to the instructions on the container, or use a premixed grout. Remove the tile spacers. Force the grout into the joints between the tiles with the grout float, and use the float to remove the excess. Work your way from the bottom up, and only grout the bottom half of the shower until you see how fast the grout will dry. Sixthly, rough wash the grout after 15 or 20 minutes when it is ready. Touch the joint with your finger. If grout residue sticks to your finger, it needs more time to dry. If your finger is clean, you can proceed with the rough wash. Dampen a sponge, and wring the excess water out. Gently clean the joints in a circular motion to remove the excess grout and smooth the joints. Clean your sponge frequently. Seventhly, perform the clean wash. Wait 30 minutes after your rough wash, and use clean water. Rinse your sponge frequently, and apply gentle pressure while you clean the face of the slate tile in a diagonal motion. Repeat as many times as necessary to clean the grout residue, but do not use too much water or dampen the joints. Allow a minimum of 72 hours for the grout to dry. In short, as a well-known business E-platform of promoting stone industry, we are in possession of a powerful technology group and high-efficiency operations management system.
