Weight Watchers, Slimming World and Lighter Life. These words are literally the bain of my life! Whenever I begin working with someone, we discuss their diet in some detail and way more often than I would like, I will here the words "my diet is pretty good, I am following Weight Watchers". At which point I try to hide my despair and begin the long hard task of convincing my new customer that this will not work for them in the long term and will negatively affect their health. However one thing I have learnt over the years is that this will not be a quick task. Indeed, like changing beliefs around anything, it will need a sustained, educated attack. Where do I start? We begin by discussing fat and how and why low fat products are bad for you. I particular I like to reference the battle between butter and margarine. The basic premise is that butter is more natural than the highly processed margarine. What that means to me is that the body will be more able to break it down as an energy source and hence ironically it is less likely to store it as fat, but more likely burn it as fuel. The opposite is true for margarine. The same can be said for low fat yoghurts, reduced fat milk or anything with less of the good stuff in.
