Of course you’re looking for a carpet cleaner and now you have started on the search of what to look for. You want to know different things to look for in a good cleaning. I have to assume you are either getting a cleaning for the first time soon or you have had a cleaner out and you thought nil of it. Ill cover some points for all of us to look for and recognize that are important for a good cleaning. Notice I said good cleaning, not necessarily the best service. That you will have to find in another blog or article. There are two different cleaning types for carpet and upholstery. One is called “Hot Water Extraction” and the other is “Encapsulation.” How water extraction or HWE is usually called steam cleaning. Encapsulation cleaning on carpet is also called bonnet cleaning. I probably shouldn’t get into the details of each of those cleanings. Instead I’ll stay on subject and cover the important keys to a good HWE. It will start with a vacuuming. This should be a dry vacuuming and include edging of the cracks and corners of each area. A lot of cleaners don’t vacuum and even more so, vacuum the edges where the carpet meets the walls. It’s said that seventy percent of dry debris can be removed with a good ole vacuuming. The way I see it is if I can get a whole lot of dirt, hair, and who knows what else out of the carpet, the rest of my cleaning will be more effective. An application of cleaning solutions is what should be happening now. The best cleaning process with the most physical effort can be put to shame unless the right cleaning solutions are used. This is the Akeley’s Heel of carpet cleaning. There are a few different methods for applying these liquids to the floor but those will not differ the quality of cleaning. Agitation of the carpet can come in a few different forms. Some cleaners vary depending on how dirty the carpet is. I like to use the best agitator available every time. The two most common tools for this are a carpet rake and a floor scrubber. The carpet rake looks like a rake but has soft plastic bristles instead of stiff ones. It is good for working in the cleaner but will not do nearly as good of a job as a floor scrubber. A floor scrubber uses a brush for carpet to do some serious agitation, breaking loose lots of dirt, lifting your carpet pile in the heavy traffic areas and ultimately delivering the best carpet cleaning. Some cleaners like to use electricity and some like the raw gasoline powered systems. Both are good and will be used for the HWE part. The truck mounted systems deliver more heat than portable systems which is better but really both systems are more than enough. This will depend more on who’s doing the cleaning because both of these cleaning systems have a lot of potential which can deliver poorly when in the wrong hands.
